"The Harvest" is Ashen Horde's first "nonconcept" album; however, it does have an overarching theme: endings. Each song takes this theme and weaves it through stories about everything from the last days of Pompeii to embracing the chaos of our modern world.

There are hyperspeed, atmospheric black metal parts; sections that are technical and brutal; and even some grindcore-inspired moments. On the other side of that, there are Voivod-inspired chords and weirdness; progressive structures; and parts that would fit on a hard rock or ‘90s alternative record. For people who like variety and are willing to spend some time with the album, there should be a lot to love.

Fans of Ashen Horde's previous albums will find a lot to like on "The Harvest." It’s definitely got the “Ashen Horde sound,” but leans even more into the melodic side. That said, it doesn't lose any of the intensity or heaviness of the early material. New vocalist, Karl Chamberlain, whose harsh vocals are dynamic and brutal, was also able to take the clean vocals to new heights. He was able to indulge in some truly epic cleans that really elevated the songs. Similarly, guitarist and founder Trevor Portz ratcheted up the solos in a similar fashion, leaning heavily into melody to counter the brutality and harshness of the more extreme parts. It gives the album a lot of depth, and a lot of variety; but still feels very cohesive.
