‘Ceremony Of Opposites’ is the central thread through SAMAEL’s steady progression, right from their bloody and satanic beginnings to their successful album “Passage”. The fact that the Universe is made of contradictions and opposites has always been the basis of their philosophy. Life does not mean to create your own truth and cut yourself off into it, but to willingly assimilate the alternatives. The same goes for their music which cannot be bothered with the pureness of style and drawing a clear dividing line between different genres. When this principle was more of a technical nature on “Passage” – metal guitars vs. electronic sound-generation – the dialectics were transferred deep into the compositions and therefore into the aesthetics of “Eternal”. This album breaths and lives from the incredible dynamics which are generated by the atmospheric passages carried by electronic sounds and heavy beats, as well as the hymnic, via majestic guitar-power raised refrains. What was a monolithic, magnificent wall of sound until now widens into a third dimension, gains depth and pulls the listener into sparkling structures surrounded by gleaming brightness to seep through and ennoble him. SAMAEL’s goal has always been to free the mind from its self-centredness and let it glide into the cosmos – they have never before managed it as successfully as with “Eternal”.
