"Silver Knife" vinyl LP in "Sanguine Blight" variant limited to 500 copies. In conspiracy with Amor Fati Productions

Since their formation in 2019, pan-European black metallers Silver Knife have patiently built their own soundworld, first with 2020's Unyielding/Unseeing full-length and then 2022's Ring EP. On the eve of the latter's release, the band made their first public performance at the esteemed Roadburn Festival. And while the names and personalities behind Silver Knife may be somewhat obscured, perhaps intentionally so, it's almost immaterial that the four members collectively number many of Belgium, France, and the Netherlands' most formidable bands orbiting black metal, so towering are those two recordings.

To coincide with another performance at Roadburn Festival, Silver Knife build that tower yet higher with their second album, simply self-titled. Like that first full-length, Silver Knife features six core songs - but these new ones are even more epic, totaling 47 minutes. The quartet also here continue the concept of being too reluctant to wallow in self-pity, and offering a harsh incentive in the midst of trying times. As such, LP#2 feels vast and urgent in equal measure, the riffing continually cascading, always dangling on the precipice of hope and hopelessness, with the rhythm section surging and swaying with a fluidity that's mesmerizing to behold. The vocals illustrate that hypothetical precipice with blanching emotion; where lyrics may not be readily recognizable, the howls annunciating those words clearly convey their meaning. More than anything, Silver Knife stunningly shows Silver Knife grasping the reins of black metal traditionalism with one hand and, with the other, guiding the journey toward treacherous, risk-taking terrain that remains utterly compelling no matter which path your journey originates from. Or, perhaps the title of the closing "Triumph in Tragedy" tells the most succinct tale.

Featuring another iconic cover courtesy of KRAS, Silver Knife's eponymous second album cements the band's status as one of black metal's most dynamic outliers.
